New (To Me) Music: The Antlers

The Antlers are a three-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. They garnered a lot of critical praise with the release of 2009’s Hospice. The band released Burst Apart, their most recent album, on May 10th. I’ve been listening to it since then, and it gains depth with every listen. The Antlers have a sound that is near Radiohead territory, but is nevertheless their own. Check out Pete Silberman’s clear, effortless falsetto, which is the perfect accompaniment to their airy yet creative multi-instrumentation, and which provides the perfect contrast to Pete’s rather, um, depressing lyrical observations. Below are two of my favourite tracks from Burst Apart, “Parentheses” and “Rolled Together.” (The latter is easily worth the price of the album in my opinion.)
